Don’t fall into the trap of hopeful ignorance. This is a scam through and through. If you’re actually experienced enough to warrant a PAID board position the company will pay you. There are plenty of executive search and board placement firms that do exactly this. They are paid to find board members and they need good people. You don’t have to pay to play. I just got off the phone with one of these sales people. They ask no qualifying questions or do any work to certify if you would even qualify for any spots. They pump you up and ask for $400 ($200 set up, $195 per month).
